This is devoted mostly to Mark Twain and Ambrose Bierce, two American writers whose works should be familiar to all Americans. In addition I have made an effort to find other humorists less famous or just as famous but now forgotten who had only a handful of books to their names. I will mention more major authors who did humor, but will not search out their works for this booklet. The design is to provide an easy guide to a library of historical humorists and their works. Abraham Lincoln was fond of Davis Ross Lock, Artemus Ward, and Robert Henry Newell. Teddy Roosevelt’s favorite humorist was Finley Peter Dunne and he co-authored a book in which George Ade has an article. Teddy coauthored a lot of books and dominated outdoors writing during his lifetime. This is a guide to what is available for free by these and other authors from Google Books.
