About The Author Edinburgh, Scotland-born author Robert Michael Ballantyne (1825 –1894) wrote novels for young boys, publishing more than 100 books. At age 16, Ballantyne went to Canada where he spent five years working for the Hudson's Bay Company. He traded with Native Americans for furs, making his journey by canoe and sleigh, which gave him the basis for his novel Snowflakes and Sunbeams (1856). Ballantyne returned to Scotland in 1847 and learned that his father had died. He published his first book the following year, Hudson's Bay: or, Life in the Wilds of North America.
