In this third Andy Mackpeace time travel adventure, our bright, introspective main character, now fourteen, travels to Montana to visit his best friend Roger who has discovered his Cheyenne Native American roots. Andy has one of his grandmother’s incense sticks so that when they burn it together they expect to travel back to the Custer Battlefield… the day before the infamous battle. However, Roger’s history is inaccurate; they arrive in the wrong year, encountering, instead, a young Cheyenne Warrior on his Vision Quest. Later, when Roger’s mother mistakenly lights the incense stick, the smoke sends the two boys travelling back to 1899…separately! While in search of Roger, for the first time in his life, Andy has to fend for himself against an extremely dangerous bully. He struggles painfully, attempting to navigate a world with few modern conveniences and where youth is short-lived. Andy finds himself on his own perilous Vision Quest and wonders if he will survive to return to the 21st Century.
