The First World War has ended and many of the dispossessed of the world find themselves beached in the teeming slum of Tiger Bay in Cardiff’s dockland. And a different war begins…
In this racial cauldron Sophie James, a young Somali prostitute, plies her dangerous trade and the idealistic Rev Nathan Thomas, believing himself called by God to work among the warring races, wrestles with poverty and prejudice. Overshadowing their lives and growing relationship is the evil enigmatic figure of the rich ship owner Hamilton.
At the centre of the story is a sacred chalice locked away in Cardiff Castle by the Marquess of Bute, once the richest man in the world. This chalice is the mystery of mysteries, and people in the Bay flourish or die in the continual battle for its ownership.
‘Wales has produced, in Tom Davies, a wonderfully passionate writer whose novels are gripping and red-blooded.’
Radio Four
‘A racy, fast-paced love story in which race, myth and legend become inseparably entwined with the ordinary folk of Tiger Bay.’
