What do you think happens when a young girl discovers that she is able to communicate with her three cats? After an accident caused when she tries to rescue a kitten from a tree, 12 year old Emily finds that she is unable to talk; but, she has gained the ability to 'speak' with her three pet cats.

Emily's adventure begins on the first day of summer vacation from school. After her accident, Emily's life is completely changed and filled with new and unusual situations. There is the Fourth of July barbecue which ends up with a mean teenage girl falling into the pool; thanks to Emily's cat, Willie, who comes to Emily's rescue.

Back to school in the Fall, Emily becomes friends with a new neighbor, Santos. He is an Hispanic boy who is self conscious of his accent. He feels good around Emily because she doesn't speak. At school when bullies try to blame a theft on Santos, Zak, another of Emily's cats, is able to come to his rescue because he has hidden in Emily's book bag with her tuna sandwich.

Next Emily, Santos, and the three cats dress for Halloween. Then, finally, Thanksgiving and the Holiday Season find Emily and the three cats in a frightening situation. As the entire family sleeps, Zak smells smoke! The cats hurry to wake Emily so that she can alert her parents, sister, and brother.

Now Emily is faced with a very difficult decision. She realizes that the special gift which she shares with her cats is connected to the fact that she is unable to speak to other people. She must choose now to wake and save her family or continue to share this unique relationship with her cats.

Emily's story has fantasy, humor and lessons about companionship, meanness, and bullying. It teaches us all about the truly important things in our lives. Especially the lives of young children.
