This Kindle edition of The Immanence Bible has a fully hyperlinked Table of Contents for all 28 Chapters. As recounted by Luke in the 17th chapter of Acts, the philosophers gather at the Areopagus to listen to an intriguing and ardent outsider. The highpoint of Paul’s presentation comes as he quotes from one of their own poets. He reminds them that this immediate sense of God, the divine Immanence, is the atmosphere “in which we live and move and have our being.” This Immanence is humanity’s raison d’être . As noted in the book The God Who is in Hell, our 21st century American culture is afflicted with a virulent overdose. We’re infected by, of all things, a theological disease. And it happened very simply. We began to understand a figure of speech in a literal way. With some consistency, the ancient writings employ one such figure of speech, anthropomorphism, when speaking of God. Our culture has taken this figure of speech (God-as-anthropomorphic) and made it a literal entity. The cure should be just as simple. We will embrace God-as-immediate-presence. We will feel and know the Immanence of spirit. And to help us along the journey, perhaps we need to read the scriptures in a slightly less anthropomorphic fashion. The Immanence Bible (TIB) is an essentially literal translation with some poetic license. The Greek word THEOS is translated as Immanence. The word KURIOS is not translated as a title derived from English nobility (“Lord”), but as a word that speaks to the essence of how one leads: by one’s own Presence….guiding the way. Some translations within The Immanence Bible may not appear to be essentially literal. For example, rather than Holy Spirit, TIB has Holy Breath. The Greek word PNEUMA is ultra-literally a breath or wind. It can also be translated as spirit. TIB is actually very literal, translating as “breath” or its cognates, such as “gasp.” Similarly, the Greek word usually translated “disciple” is not from the Greek word for discipline, but from the word for learning. Thus TIB’s translation “those who were thinking” or “learners” instead of “disciples.” And, because the Greek word PATER means not only a human father, but can also indicate the very center of who we are, TIB often translates in this full sense: “very center”, “loving center” and related expressions.Other familiar Biblical English words and expressions are freshly translated here. The three-part Greek word most often translated “prayer” in common Bibles, is “to hold in well-being” in The Immanence Bible. This phrase is a more literal rendering of the word and may help the reader be open to new light from the text. Similarly the word translated frequently as “worship” in most Bibles is more literally “flowing toward” in TIB. The intriguing expression “Son of Man” (in most versions) can point toward a prophetic figure from the Old Testament, or even to the new community of humanity emerging within the Realm of Upward Vision. So, in TIB, this phrase is often “child/children of humanity” in accord with the context of the particular passage. Rather than simply transliterating the words Pharisees and Sadducees, as most versions do, The Immanence Bible translates (with some poetic license) these two terms into the current equivalent English words: Saved and Wealthy Elite. The devout Pharisees were the truly “saved” of their particular culture. They had preserved so much of their religion’s spirit and practice in very tough times. The Sadducees were the wealthy, religious elite who also exercised significant governing influence within their first century culture. The Immanence Bible was created using the World English Bible, The Etymologicial New Testament, and the Greek text itself. The result is a totally new translation of the Book of Matthew.
