"The storyline really draws you in and it is one of those books you think about when you're not reading it. I love the idea of a fertility farm, it is so far out there and un-thought of that it is like nothing I've read before."
"Empathy for the characters builds steadily throughout. The unforgiving examination of the subject matter is apposite for our times."
Rixon Marwick is a valuable person. What makes him valuable? He’s fertile. In 2052, the decline in the population of Britain reaches an all-time low with no new births in that year. In an attempt to correct the balance, the government takes over the fertilisation and procreation processes for the country. Stringent laws are introduced to combat the effects of the man-made virus which has swept the nation and left the majority of males sterile.
The government introduces a system of testing on all males who are within the age of reproduction. Sex outside the state of marriage is declared as a punishable offense. The government attempts to prevent the spread of the disease by crushing the populace and prohibiting all forms of sexual activity. As the country plunges into the dark ages, the development of technology is halted and people are encouraged to spy on their neighbours and report them if they are suspected adulterers, homosexuals or worse, if they are not British Nationals.
As the disease spreads worldwide similar farms are set up and fertile men are captive for the system to use as it sees fit. Rixon who has been held prisoner at the farm for eight years finds some information that gives him the courage to attempt an escape.
He has to find Chloe his girlfriend; he has to find the child she may have had because this child would have been conceived in a loving relationship, something that no longer happens in the world.
