The Duchess and the Hunt - Melissa Morgan

The Duchess and the Hunt

Ellie found it easier to be around horses than around people. She didn't get along with people. She felt intimidated by the other riding stable girls and was regularly teased by them for her red curly hair, her lineage and her horse.

Things changed dramatically when Ellie's mum died of cancer. The warm house became cold and heartless. Her father became dismissive of her and made her feel small. He was more interested in upholding the good family name than encouraging and loving his daughter.

During a routine ride in the forest with her horse Moon she encounters a mysterious hunting party. The Master of the Hunt stares at Ellie with an air of authority. The other riders do not even look her way. One of the riders directly behind the Master of the Hunt, Ellie noticed, has his arms around a small figure, slumped against his chest, and in a flash of her face they rode past. Ellie was sure she saw a bruise on the small figure. She shivered.

There was something magical about the hunt and the mysterious riders, The hunt certainly never looked like any hunt she knew. Were they hunting for foxes or were they hunting for something else? She was mesmerized by the way the Master stared at Ellie with his black eyes. She wanted to find out more and meet them again. Could this be an encounter which will change the course of her life?

Suddenly they were surrounded by fog that seemed to have pulled around them like a curtain out of nowhere, and Ellie felt a chill down her spine.

This was no ordinary hunt....
