When the planetship Narcoma is devoured by cosmolocusts, only one scout craft, a converted moon named Sark, and four members of the crew escape the destruction. Two are Pioneers: Lett, who has an artificial arm that conceals some useful and lethal surprises; and Lana, beautiful and fiery tempered. Sark is their craft for Pioneer missions. The other two are Davval, an engineer whose body parts can be removed and reattached, and Yennett, a beautiful administration girl with a spirit of adventure. Sark himself can also be counted as a member of the group, as he has very much his own personality; lecherous, irreverent and flippant.Their only hope is to fly through an entry portal into Turmoil Space. Once there, they must find an exit portal to get back into their own world. At the end of the entry portal, they come across Teeter. He is a strange and unpleasant individual who offers to supply them with a chart in return for toys. Having improvised toys to get the map, the group sets off on the dangerous trek across Turmoil Space to find the exit portal. On the way, they encounter bizarre and dangerous situations and characters, including the head-pulp factory, the field of undulating ferrets, and a space train that they must help after it gets derailed and is attacked by pirates. Elsewhere, Davval is turned into a mouse by a being that forces them to steal honey from a giant beehive in space, and after escaping from the digestive tract of a time-reversal leach, Sark is taken by a giant to be included in a rockery in his garden, along with other unusual garden features such as the Poppup Heads and the Swearing Frogs. They escape, but need to navigate a lethal labyrinth to get back on track. The labyrinth’s denizens include the Minotaur, the Duck of Death and several Ambush Cacti.Sark is intended as a light-hearted space adventure, with a sense of humour and a taste for the ridiculous.
