The short stories in this book are about characters who either live in the Caribbean or who have had a Caribbean-influenced upbringing, mainly Jamaican and Haitian. Anyone who has Caribbean parents can relate. The first story "Dife San Chodye (Fire Without a Pot), set in Haiti is about what happens when things spin out of control. It is told form the points of view of a young boy and his uncle. The second story, "The Simple Life," is about an elderly couple living a quiet, peaceful, loving existence. "In My Mama's Mind," is about the strained relationship between a mother and daughter. This story shows how many Caribbean parents fight for control over the lives of their children. "Christian is Hypocritical," is a simple, straight forward story told from the point of view of a Jamaican country girl. Last is a poem "Lovers or Friends?"
