Faith and Public Policy Institute Releases Poverty Rating Guide on Congress
PRINCETON, N.J., January, 2013-- The Faith and Public Policy Institute released a new book series entitled “Eradicating Poverty in America: 112th Congressional Poverty Rating Guide” at the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Interfaith Service on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 4 PM in the Capital City of New Jersey at Turning Point United Methodist Church. The Poverty Rating Guide is based on a ten point evaluation rating system based on public congressional information. Each Senator receives a grade from “A” to “F” on their work on eradicating poverty in America. The following is five of the ten point rating system:
1. Advocate for Children in Poverty in America including Quality Education.
2. Decrease Unemployment Rate with Training Programs for Unskilled and Low Skilled Workers including Support of Veterans.
3. Increase Minimum Wage to Living Wage Salaries.
4. Invest in Parents with the Head Start Program and Workplace Day Care.
5. Develop Housing Rehabilitation Program including Low Density Public Housing.
The president of the Faith & Public Policy Institute, Dr. Jessica J. Davis, states, “The faith community is the moral voice of America. The moral voice of America is saying, ‘Remember the poor.’ The author of ‘The Other America,’ Michael Harrington, stated that the only institution that can eradicate poverty is the federal government. If this is true, the faith community must hold the government accountable. The Institute is picking up the 1968 poverty policy mantle of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Poor People’s Campaign because America has not fulfilled her Dream. America has a moral responsibility to eradicate poverty. We believe this Poverty Rating Guide will help to hold our government accountable to the 49.7 million Americans, 16% of our population, now living below the poverty line with an annual income of $22, 811 or less for a family of four as a result of the Great Recession.”
The Faith & Public Policy Institute Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charitable, religious, and educational nonprofit organization in Princeton, New Jersey. The mission of the Faith and Public Policy Institute is to educate the faith community on domestic and foreign policy.
