A Play of Ninth Century Rome. In 896, Pope Formosus, who had ascended the papal throne five years earlier, died under suspicious circumstances and was buried. Some months later his successor, Stephen Stephen VI, convened the infamous “Cadaver Synod” for which Formosus’ body was disinterred, clad in papal vestments, and tried for crimes against the church. The verdict was that Formosus had been unworthy to be pope. All his measures and acts were annulled and all orders he had conferred were declared invalid. Then the papal vestments were torn from the corpse, and it was delivered to a mob outside the church. Members of the mob carried the corpse to the banks of the Tiber and hurled it into the river. This play is the story of Pope Formosus and the Cadaver Synod.
