Young love. Lost love. First love. Forbidden love.

Belle: Sixteen year old Belle does not deny that most of her friends are geeks, dweebs, nerds, dorks, and swats. She is happy to be returning to the old family home and plans to concentrate on her studies. She has every intention of staying well away from her former childhood friend Liam, who has turned into a distracting ‘train wreck’ and all round trouble-maker.

Someone may have once described her as ‘Short. Mousey. No fashion sense.’ – but Belle is growing up and is about to cause a major headache for her father and a great deal of heartache for the boys in the area.

Ewan: When forced to move out of his home in the city and back his rundown old family home in the heart of the countryside, Ewan thinks his children will benefit from being away from the temptations of the big city. But every country girl and boy knows that temptations are everywhere if you know where to look, and Ewan will go to any lengths – however extreme – to make sure that his teenage daughter Belle keeps away from the local bad boy Liam, his tarty mother and trailer trash family.

Sagan: Belle’s ‘stepsister’ – the spoiled and man-mad Sagan is ‘vain, self-obsessed, nasty, and sarcastic’ and very certain of her irresistible appeal to men:

“Last time I wore this, two lifeguards had to be resuscitated due to over-heating, an elderly man had a sort of cardiac episode just looking at me and three marriages broke up on the spot when the husbands caught sight of my double D’s and amazing ass. You think we’ll be skinny-dipping – I’m up for that?”

Liam: According to Belle’s father, Liam is ‘every father’s nightmare’ and has almost every bad habit under the sun. “An out-of control hooligan with a serious attitude problem. It is also a known fact that the phrase ‘lock up your daughters’ was practically invented for him.” And very few people are convinced that Liam and Belle will stick to their self-imposed ‘no-touching’ deal, especially as the childhood bond created from a shared tragedy means that they find it increasingly difficult to stay apart.

Aunt Dolly: Aunt Dolly is the backbone of the family, always obliging, always available and unfailingly at Ewan’s beck and call – but she’s at breaking point and about to rebel.

And their seemingly respectable neighbours? ‘There must be something in the water here’, Sagan declares, as all their deep, dark and dirty secrets begin to bubble to the surface.
