The book is structured around the life of Jake, a teenage boy, whose mother is hospitalized, and has to stay with his Uncle Tom for a few days. The first section of “The Birds of Anna Mall Kingdom” is the story of young Jake getting acquainted with his Uncle Tom and learning to listen, see and feel things in nature right before your eyes. Uncle Tom tries to teach Jake about the beauty of the world around him. Uncle Tom teaches Jake that watching birds and identifying a species is fun to do. Uncle Tom tries to get Jake to concentrate on what he is observing to make bird watching a year round habit. He takes Jake on a journey through Anna Mall Kingdom, where some of the most beautiful birds in the world reside. The book ends with Uncle Tom and Jake learning from each other in there short time together. They saw through the eyes of each other… what each other had been missing.
