The titular artificial intelligence guides their world ship. Aestaban woke humanity from its stasis sleep. However, once humanity learns of Stone Mind’s genetic experimentation they are appalled and strip the super computer of many responsibilities. Simultaneously, humanity and Stone Mind must deal with a potentially volatile first contact situation with the alien race that already populates the system they have entered.
However, the rulers of humanity, under pressure from their electorate, are plotting to start a war with the aliens, in order to justify colonizing their habitable biospheres. It is up to a few human scientists and the weakened Stone Mind to put aside their differences in order to defeat the warmongers.
