Rachel has fallen in love with Byron and is sure he is the man of her dreams. They move into a beautiful Philadelphia brownstone apartment house together, and Byron has brought in furniture from home. Their world is as good as it gets until Byron’s ex-girlfriend shows up with a U-haul truck to repossess her belongings and announces he has not paid child support once for their son in three years.

Rachel is devastated when Byron runs from his ex-girlfriend to her with differing accounts of his intentions. Rachel watches the furniture leave their apartment and decides the relationship is over, and in a loud confrontation in the hallway with Byron she notices a man’s dress shoe on the stairs above her. Not wanting to be more embarrassed than she was, Rachel leaves the building.

Rachel informs Byron that the landlady has given them permission to break their lease, but he refuses to leave, insisting she is the love of his life. As their relationship grows more contentious, Byron experiences episodes of asphyxia he claims are being caused by a gas leak in the apartment. However, no one else smells the gas. Byron creates a nightmare for everyone in the apartment building, but he refuses to move.

As Rachel falls out of love with Byron, she falls in love with the mysterious man who lives in the apartment above her, Christian. He’s always there when she needs him. She’s comforted by the sounds he makes moving around his apartment at night. His visits to her apartment when Byron is not there are what dreams are made of. Still, there is a problem.
