FINALIST: Eric Hoffer Awards - 2013 - Children's Books

Honey, an inquisitive, young parakeet living in the Australian Outback, decides to become a superhero after she spies a human family watching Superman. Since she already has the power of flight, all she needs to do is create a costume to conceal her true identity and then fly off in search of animals that need rescuing.

Unfortunately, every time she tries to help, Honey only ends up making matters worse. She spoils Kangaroo’s game of hide-and-go-seek by revealing his hiding place to Wallaby; Mr. Anteater must go hungry when she alerts the ants to his presence, and Mrs. Koala is made a laughingstock among bears when Honey pretends to be her Joey. Finally realizing that she’s not as heroic as she’d like, Honey gives up her day-saving efforts.

But what happens when someone actually needs Honey’s help? Will she rise to the challenge?

There’s only one way to find out: join Honey in her Australian superhero adventure.

"The story is beautifully and sympathetically written, so that the young ones are not overwhelmed with big words, especially if they try to read it themselves. The illustrations by Sarah Shaw are perfect, and complements the story in their simplicity. If you have an inquisitive young child or two, then they will love this book." ~ Lynn Worton

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR

Have you noticed that dogs, cats, and teddy bears get all the attention in kids’ books? I have, and while I love these furry creatures, I’ve made it my mission to give our feathered friends the spotlight they so rightly deserve.

And so the "Bird Brain Books" were born. Twelve are now available (or will be soon), and who knows what the future may bring. I just can’t get enough of my favorite feathery goofballs.

What’s more, these books teach important lessons in entertaining, beak-sized bite: remember to say thank you when someone does something nice for you; know that who you are—rather than what you look like—is what makes you special; appreciate love, friendship, and beauty wherever you can find it; and enjoy the simple bliss of being a kid.

I love to chirp about my books with anyone who will listen, and have special sections on my website for readers, parents, teachers, librarians, and more. My pet Sun Conure, Ducky, also writes a weekly blog just for kids.
