Excerpt:

I tightened my grip on my beer and took a long swig. There had to be someone here who wanted something easy. Someone who could help me prove to myself that I wasn't the animal I'd been lately, the one who'd spent the months after my rescue fucking any man I could. I wanted a woman, but didn't know if I could handle that yet. I was rusty and, if I admitted it to myself, more than a little freaked out.

The world had changed so much since 1927, and so had I. Maybe I could shake this darkness off in time, but I rather doubted I'd go back to the carefree demon I used to be.

One more time. I'd just scan the room once more, then I'd leave, find somewhere…lighter. Easier to handle. Or just go home and try another night and hope I didn't get too weak. And then, I felt it--clean, wholesome, just a little bit sad. A woman who'd just broken up with her boyfriend and didn't want to spend the night alone. Perfect. I lifted my eyes and focused on the source--one of the waitresses.

She was a small woman wearing a crisp white button-down shirt and a mini skirt that hugged her curves. She leaned over as she served a table full of rowdy men their drinks, looked up, and met my eyes. A shock ran through me, making my cock stand up at attention.

So blue, those eyes, like the deepest, clearest lake. Her dark hair was pulled back in a ponytail, but a few strands slid out to cling to her face. I wanted to brush them away, then take her hair down and run my hands through it. It would probably feel like silk, all smooth and soft. Flushing, the waitress straightened and hurried away, her tiny frame lost in the crowd. I'd sensed a sudden spike of desire, though. She wanted me, just like I wanted her. We're both broken, I mused as I got up and headed for the bar. Too late--she was heading outside. I followed her, but paused by the door for a moment.

I had no idea how to pick up a woman anymore. Somehow, Hey, I'm lonely and so are you, let's go to your place and have a good time didn't seem like the best of pickup lines. Eli, you have really lost your mojo, I thought, running a hand through my hair anxiously.
