An Excerpt from Smoking Thoughts

One terrible mistake made by those attempting to quit is to think that every single time they have previously attempted to give up only to go back to smoking was a complete failure.
Do you believe that you are a failure at 'Quitting'? You may feel so accustomed to failure that the entire notion of success seems absurd: of course you'll fail, you've failed a thousand times before. This kind of mentality is a failure of society, at least in my eyes. Society is so caught up on results, on the bottom line, on material objects and quantifiable gains. This mindset is far from healthy. It is far more positive to see the good of your past attempts than it is to see the bad. Seeing success in your past attempts will actually motivate you to go on and succeed now, where seeing failure in your past attempt creates the belief that you will fail in the future, and that belief in itself can severely damage your chances of success.

Think back to a previous time when you attempted to quit smoking and were not as successful as you would have liked to have been. What comes to mind? If it is the positive thoughts of health that you experienced at the time then good, keep that. In fact, indulge in it. Be proud of the fact that you lived healthily for a while, no matter how short a time it may have been. We'll return to this in a moment.

If, however, you believe that those previous attempts of quitting were failures, please just allow yourself to think on the following:
• Every time you attempted to quit you were still more successful than you would have been by simply not trying. You would at the very least have cut down your tobacco intake at those times, which surely can only be an improvement. Already, in that regard, an effort to quit is automatically a success, regardless of the outcome.
• Try to remember the emotional positivity of quitting. Sure, there may have been a lot of anger, anxiety and other negative emotions, but amongst them I'm willing to bet you felt a genuine positivity about the very fact that you were caring for your own health and the idea that you might create a better future for yourself.
• Hopefully, you will have felt a lot of support from loved ones when you attempted to quit. What is important here isn't their actions, but rather the feeling they gave you. By quitting, you got a positive emotional boost, again regardless of the outcome.
• Every time you attempted to quit, you learnt something about the nature of quitting. Your efforts brought you closer to success.

Hopefully with these points you can being to see that, regardless of the outcome, an effort to live healthier is always a success, and this is important because seeing a success in the very effort of quitting will help motivate you to put more effort in this time around.
