At seventeen, Max is fed up with his life at home. His dad has left. His mother is always mad at him. His summer is ruined and he decides it's time to make it on his own, on the streets. He meets a girl who has been living on the streets for a while. Her name is Angel, and she offers to show him how to survive out there on his own. But while she's showing him the streets, they accidentally stumble across a door to the Land of Shade, the land of faerie. There they meet a great, shaggy, one-eyed faerie named Hortho. They see wondrous sights, but also come across deadly creatures. And, they learn that the door that led them in, can't be used as a way out. At least not right away. Now they have to learn to rely on each other if they're going to live to find their way through the Land of Shade and make it back home again.
