A delightful pictorial journey to classic Maine cottages and camps. This book showcases old and new, luxurious and rustic. There are cottages and camps in Western Maine, the coast, in the "county" and more.IntroductionWe’re sitting at the end of the dock with our feet in the water. The boat is tied up, and the kids are laughing and playing on the lush lawn. It’s about 78 degrees, but feels much warmer. The sun gently sets below the spruce trees. We can smell campfires burning, and see soft white billows of smoke on the lake. The loons prepare everyone for a peaceful evening. This is the way life should be.We’re enjoying a friend’s cottage on Moody’s Island on Damariscotta Lake in Nobleboro Maine in July. One of the great joys of living in Maine is spending time in lakefront cottages and camps like this, without having to travel for hours to get her. Some people travel for days to get here. It’s in our backyard. The enjoyment runs deeper than a beautiful cottage on a lake though. We’ve enjoyed a rough 1900’s camp on Alford Lake it was the best vacations we ever had in Maine. Alford lake is mostly grandfathered, and so you won’t stumble on the usual summer crowds. We’ve also stayed in a hunter’s cabin with no running water or indoor plumbing on the Allegash River. The black flies were deadly. But the “locals” showed us ancient secrets for keeping them away, and they showed us how to wear black fly nets. It’s about being with your family, friends, and neighbors in a beautiful, peaceful setting. It’s about setting aside the negative things in this life, for just a bit.Spending time in a classic Maine cottage or camp can change your life. In our hectic life we can recall the sweeter things in life by staying in a camp or cottage, like campfires, swimming in a fresh water pond, or fishing without a watch or cell phone. We can recall talking to your kids and actually enjoy them again. We can recall why we’re excited about life and all the possibilities. This is why we wrote Classic Maine Cottages and Camps.I hope you enjoy the journey.I tried to showcase camps and cottages at every end of the spectrum, from million dollar compounds to hunter’s cottages on backwoods ponds.I’m sure you’ll find like or to dream about. Thanks for taking the journey with me!David Newcastle
