In the summer of 1941, Colonel Marina Mikhailovna Raskova, a record-breaking aviator, was called upon to organize a regiment of Soviet women pilots to fly night combat missions of harassment bombing. This particular regiment (along with 2 others), was pioneered by Raskova, and was composed entirely of women most of them barely 20 years old, from the pilots to the mechanics and from the officers to the bomb loaders.
