Ten year old Harold Spencer lives in the Wiltshire village of Plumley; the trouble for Harold is the grown-ups of the village dearly wish he did not. Although never malicious and with a heart of gold, his capers cause a goodly number of aggrieved villagers to rattle and bang on the Spencers' front door, with a view to demanding immediate recompense for damage to property and on occasions body and soul from Harold's weary father, Mr Bernard Spencer.
Aiding Harold in his daily shenanikins are his trusty sidekicks, twins Tim and Larry Tucker, and on the odd occasion - very odd in fact and only when her parents are unaware of her plans - the young and pretty and (unusual seeing she is a friend of Harold's), ladylike Betty Unsworth.
This is the first in a series of seven separate adventures for Harold Spencer; all set in austerity late 40s Britain. Here, Harold and his friends go apple scrumping with the layabout of the village - Old Jim Meery, keep an eye out for renegade Mohicans, and then Harold dashes off - literally - to bring the tale to a rip-roaring finale.
