Obesity is epidemic in the United States with its easy availability of calorie dense foods. Currently, 68% of the population is overweight or obese, an astonishing number that continues to rise. Furthermore, obesity threatens to overshadow smoking as the leading cause of preventable death in this nation.
How is it that obesity is so damaging? It affects every organ system and it increases the risk of several forms of cancer. Knowing these facts, medicine has sought solutions, one recent entry being bariatric surgery (sometimes called gastric bypass surgery).

This introduction is intended as an overview the bariatric surgery options. Included are the Wikipedia articles on the following:

1. bariatric surgery

2. gastric bypass surgery

3. adjustable gastric band (Lap Band)

4. Roux-en-y anastomosis

5. Sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve)

6. Body mass index (BMI)

7. Overeaters Anonymous (OA)

The articles have been formatted for the Kindle, with all the hyperlinks and images preserved, and with the original Table of Contents. The purpose is to give you a basis for further research.
