The search for an appropriate style of political leadership has spanned the evolution of geopolitical entities, two-and-a-half millennia, and countless regimes, from the 4th century B.C.E.'s Aristotle and Mencius to the 20th century's Sigmund Freud to various philosophers and theorists of modernity. As humanity's sociopolitical communities evolved from ancient tribalism to city-states and beyond, political power has necessarily evolved and expanded according to the needs of both the people and the regime, but not without numerous failures and missteps. In tandem with the evolution of power, humanity's understanding of itself has similarly evolved, producing a more coherent approach to political entities and leadership both of and within.
