While returning from a bombing raid over Belfast in May 1941, a German pilot is forced to bail out over the Irish Free State. His first contact is with two brothers, Sonny and Damien, who are sympathetic to the German side. They decide to hide the pilot in their farmhouse, and try to figure out a way to turn him over to the IRA. Complications ensue, however, when their cousin Kathleen discovers the pilot and subsequently becomes attracted to him.As local suspicions intensify, the brothers, fearing prison or worse as they struggle to establish contact with somebody who can take the pilot off their hands, are frequently scrambling to protect their secret. Growing tensions yield to a final confrontation, in which the conspirators are forced to decide between their liberty and the risks they are prepared to take for their political convictions.
