...a most improbable love story! Duff, with an advanced degree in art history, takes a routine office job--just until his dream job of college teaching becomes a reality. Everyone, including him, expects that he will marry old flame, Tanya, but one look at blue-collar Raina Hudson changes his life forever. Duff is mad for Raina--almost obsessed, but in a non-threatening way. He just wants to love her and protect her at all times--even when she and her best friend, Marisol, decide to take a free-wheeling road trip. But how is he to get the same time off from their small office, when he has only been there six months and not due any vacation time? And he knows office Dictator Dianne will never let him go!
Aha! He's got it. He'll tell them all his grandmother in Maine died suddenly, and he needs to be there with his devastated family and to help with funeral arrangements. The fact that he has never set foot in Maine doesn't bother him at all. He's good at making things up.
Duff decides to follow the girls as they drive north, stopping wherever the spirit moves them. If he can just stay close enough to protect them in an emergency---well,that's not stalking, is it? But just as he decides Raina is a grown woman and deserves to take her own chances, Fate intervenes again--his real grandmother does die, and he's off to Stockbridge, MA. to console his mother, and face his issues with Tanya.
One misadventure after another awaits all three road-trippers as they get as far as Washington,DC. Although this vacation from love is just what Raina wanted, it gives both Duff and Raina time to rethink their relationship. With a little help from Marisol, Raina comes to terms with who she is, and who she might become, and whether a future with Duff is---well, in her fututre at all.
Does she really want a vacation from love?
