The three main characters we are following in this book are Ducky, Pritchie, and Queenie. The characters can represent students at any school because, although all students can learn, many students also display habits and attitudes that interfere with their potential to achieve and their ability to excel. For example, Ducky is a capable learner, but he is also a ‘slicker’ who dislikes school and is always trying to find a way of escape by attempting to outsmart his authorities.

Pritchie is intelligent, but he is also a goof-off and a prankster who is mischievous, selfish, and bossy. Because of Pritchie’s different characteristics, he can represent more than one student type. Unfortunately, poor choices and unwise decisions always backfire on Ducky and Pritchie. The results of their actions teach that all behaviors have consequences. However, both Ducky and Pritchie learn from their mistakes. Each lesson learned leads to positive, changed behavior.

Finally, Queenie is a model student. She takes learning very seriously and prides herself in being an outstanding achiever. As a result, she earns the respect of her peers and teachers. Although she is not perfect, her character demonstrates that good behavior and hard work do pay off. Hopefully, all students will strive to emulate Queenie.
