In his autobiography, Zap!, Alex Czapsky, publisher, editor-in-chief, and head writer for the seminal Sixties underground newspaper, Zap Samizdat, wrote that “[with] ’Black Holes’ I found a story that would allow me to live my dream of writing an article that displayed the observational acumen of Truman Capote, the narrative verve of Tom Wolfe, and the cosmic implications of J. Chung. I pulled it off magnificently.”

Here, for the first time in digital form, is the article that originally appeared in the April 25, 1968, issue of Zap Samizdat, a story of a group of rural oddballs who called themselves The Future Assurance Committee and was charged with the task of saving the universe.
