When nine year old Isobel squeezes through a hole in an old burned out pine tree stump, she enters a Parallel World and cannot return through the portal until she makes a difference in that Parallel World. Though Isobel imagines that making a difference in the Parallel World must involve something of great significance, quite the opposite is true: all she has to do is pick up one piece of paper to make a difference. The simple act of picking up a piece of paper and disposing of it properly reveals consequences far beyond anything she can imagine. She is accompanied on her journey through the Parallel World by Beau Geste - an Irish Setter - and guided by Silver Toes, an aging Native American woman.
