Mercenary Jack Vane had no choice. The New Mexico Jewish Mob kingpin, Yaakov Irgun decreed either he take the case and succeed in finding what Irgun wants, or Jack dies. The problem is Irgun wants Jack to find a lost treasure worth billions, but probably only a legend. And Jack would become entangled in a global energy scam that dwarfs anything in history.

The case embroils Jack in clashes that leave him accused of serial murder. Since Jack is suffering from strange blackouts, he doesn’t actually know whether he’s guilty or not. Albuquerque Police Lieutenant Desdemona Warchovski—Jack’s bombshell ex-girlfriend, who is
still enraged over his jilting her—is determined to find Jack guilty, or gun him down, or both.

The situation becomes worse when Jack discovers that a mysterious international cabal also seeks the lost treasure. But their goal is to finance a vast conspiracy to steal all of New Mexico’s energy riches. This scheme will wreak environmental havoc and destroy Indian sacred lands, ancient, mystic petroglyphs, and the key to unimaginably vast wealth. And this group wants Jack to double-cross the Santa Fe crime family to help them—or they will kill him before even Lieutenant Warchovski or the mob—except they will make it hurt a lot more.

The clock is counting down. Jack is a fugitive, fearful, and alone. Pursued by a Russian International mercenary, a corrupt US Senator, and other dark forces, can Jack trust the mysterious Native American known as Coach to help him? Or is Coach his greatest enemy? Will the powerful Santa Fe movie star Pal Kellmer testify against Jack for the taboo love of Desdemona? Or—just what is Kellmer’s relentless interest in Jack’s torment? Trapped in this dangerous landscape, Jack must find the treasure, his own soul, and the killer—even if it turns out to be himself.
