Layton has bullies, but what hurts the most is his best friend, Rick, betrayed him. Together, he and his new friends take pleasure in tormenting Layton, daily.

At a birthday party, when he's humiliated by them, he decides to get back at them for good! Finding inspiration in the old vampire movies, he frightens them out of their wits. Every night, they must pay him with a sweet brown substance known as chocolate, if they want to live.

While Layton is busy frightening his bullies, things at home aren't so good. But with the help of his new friends, he finds courage and happiness that helps him progress into the fifth grade, despite his antagonists.

In the end, Rick learns a valuable lesson about friendship and betrayal.
