In 1865 the Protestant Pretender to the English Throne, James, the Duke of Monmouth set sail from Holland to lead a rebellion against the crown of James II. This is an account of the ill-fated Rebellion of 1685 in the West Country of England, detailing Monmouth’s poorly conducted campaign through the West of England, the Battle of Sedgemoor (the last battle fought on English soil), leading to the retribution at the notorious Bloody Assizes conducted by Judge Jeffreys.
