Book 1 in a series.
Warrior Queen is book 2
Dunstan Chronicles is 3
1066 - Norman Invasion is book 4
This book has it all.
You will leave reading it as exhausted as the Saxon warriors after their epic battle with Guthrum's unbeatable Viking army.
The book is historically accurate, so in addition to being a 'great read' you will emerge from the battle on Bratton's chalky hillside understanding more about English history, its people and its wildlife.
Go stand on the battlefield.
I did.
In the script you can feel the intensity as King Alfred's men trudged up the slope to where the Viking warriors stood, confident of success, yelling abuse at those they thought they were about to slaughter.
But Saxons! Viking Invasion is far more than blood and conflict. It is about tactics, psychology and understanding your own strengths and weaknesses.
King Alfred's kingdom should have been wiped from history. How it survived is still a mystery, yet here I suggest a scheme that may be the answer. Read the book and decide for yourself ... and feedback what you think.
Additional comments:
The Saxon period is 600 years of lost English history. A time of intense pressure and stress.
The pressure exerted by the invading Danish Vikings on the Saxon kingdom of Wessex was extreme. Eventually King Alfred’s kingdom was reduced to a one acre island in the middle of a Somerset marsh. Yet Alfred eventually regained everything.
This book follows the pathway from the very first recorded incursions by the Vikings through to the decisive battle that allowed Alfred’s ultimate victory.
Life does not get more difficult than this!
