First published in 1895, "Notes on the District of Menteith" comprises a series of light sketches on this small area of central Scotland that R.B. Cunninghame Graham describes as being a flat and shadowy landscape.

A 3rd edition, published in 1907, was illustrated with pen and ink drawings by Walter Bain. This new edition contains a series of black and white photographs depicting Flanders Moss and Inchmahome, the tiny island on the Lake of Menteith where R.B. Cunninghame Graham is buried.

The new edition is also supplemented with two stories by Cunninghame Graham relevant to the district: "Mist in Menteith" and "The Beggar Earl".
