"Welcome to the Real World" is a golf story. Otto Penzler asked me for a story for an anthology with a golf-and-crime theme, and I wrote one called "Hit the Ball, Drag Fred." But then I put it in my big collection, ENOUGH ROPE, and that came out before Otto's book, and his had to be previously unpublished. From out of nowhere the idea for this story came along, and both Otto and I were delighted with it. So it hasn't been collected, and won't be until I put together a collection of new stories, and that may not happen for a while. So it's my pleasure to make it available for Kindle.I don't play golf, but I have to say I love golf stories. Keller, my wistful hit man, doesn't play either, but an assignment leads him to a gated community with a golf course, and he hangs out and tells stories with the rest of the members, even if he never does lay hands on a niblick. (You can read all about that, and much else, in the third Keller novel, HIT PARADE.)I hope you enjoy "Welcome to the Real World"!
