Dominique Aury's world-famous and world-class gift to her lover was first published by Olympia, won a prize, and sent the police after publisher Maurice Girodias. This version derives from the second, improved translation, dubbed "The Wisdom of the Lash" in an effort to fool the cops. Not imported into the U.S. until the early '60s, the fate of O was debated extensively in courts, until Olympia was finally declared sole owner of all English rights, a fact pirates have had some trouble dealing with.
