This novel describes the under side of advantage of a family living in Mao's China during the early redistribution of land, after the Civil War.
The arguments of both the old and new social orders are presented in the dialog between the reeducation cadre and the members of the landlord family as recounted by it's last survivor.
This is taken from the larger work, The China Sand Wedge.
