Steven Reynolds and Linda Coleman work an insurance fraud scam that nets them $1.6 million in cash. Private investigator Dan Ballantine works the case, and, after he locates the pair hiding in a remote mountain cabin in Idaho, calls in the FBI. Coleman senses trouble, drugs Reynolds, and absconds with the cash a few hours before an FBI raid results in Reynolds’ arrest.
Coleman drives to Salt Lake City, abandons her Jeep, pays cash for a used Toyota from a private seller, and continues to Las Vegas. She stashes the money and buys a new identity from a mob connected strip-mall business. As “Lori Portman” she visits The Bellagio for a physical make-over. While she is watching the fountains afterward, handsome and wealthy cattle rancher Max Tucker buys her a drink and charms her into joining him for an expensive dinner.
Coleman is wary of Max’s invitation to visit him on his Arizona ranch, but, after several expensive weekends together, she travels to Tucson.
Two years later Coleman is still on Tucker’s ranch–as his captive. Max abuses her physically and sexually, and her attempts to escape and, later, to kill Max, fail. With the help of her one friend, she sends a written cry for help to Reynolds.
Coleman’s former partner in crime has completed a year and a half in federal prison and is working in Boise where he must stay as a condition of his parole. Reynolds contacts Ballantine, shows him Coleman’s letter, and offers him half of whatever money he can recover if he rescues Coleman.
Ballantine goes to Tucson and learns Tucker is smuggling illegal immigrants and cocaine into the country through his ranch. He formulates a plan to remove Coleman from Tucker’s ranch and recover the money she stole from Reynolds.
