Born with sirenomelia (or Mermaid Syndrome), Dusana was abandoned as an infant in one of the tents of the Chaloupek Brothers’ Amazing Oddities sideshow. And though her adopted parents, Tomas and Eva, see to it that Dusie attends school from September until June, she must spend her summers as a sideshow attraction. After seventeen years of performing as “Dusana – Mermaid of the Deep,” Dusie is tired of being gawked at. She enlists the aid of her friend, Rico the Wolf-boy, in locating a doctor to separate her fused legs. There's just one small problem—even if they find a doctor will to operate, her parents will never agree to the surgery. Nevertheless, Dusana is determined to belong. And as the old saying goes: “Be careful what you wish for!”
