King John, the much-maligned English monarch, in this novel reaches out from the Other Side to browbeat his descendant William Ramsay into fixing up his reputation. Never mind that the king beat his glib-talking nephew to death with his mailed fist; left his peculating steward to die, shackled to a rampart in chains of gold; and starved Maud de Briouze and her young son to death in the dungeons of Windsor Castle. These peccadilloes, he says, were forced on him in his role as responsible monarch, and he just had to do what he did. Claiming to be grossly misunderstood, he insists that Bill Ramsay write up some of the wonderful people who were his descendants, and so initiate a major makeover of his rather ominously purple karma. Alas! Life (and the Other Thing) isn’t that easy. As it turns out, the vignettes resulting from a random sampling of the king’s DNA group reveal some other bad apples in the family tree. Even worse, some of the descendants are stimulated by Ramsay’s work to get into the act themselves. So in the end, both Bill and the king get some serious trouble with the powers that be on the Other Side.
