A second generation immigrant from Mexico, Cesar Chavez was born in Arizona. At age 10, Cesar’s family lost their 160 acre homestead, when a long drought forced a public sale of their farm. The Chavez family moved to California to join the many migrant workers who roamed from farm to farm. At 15, Cesar quit school and took on the “pachuco” (showy) life. Then World War II broke out, and Cesar joined the Navy. After the Navy he began organizing the migrant workers into a farm workers union. Cesar became a labor leader for the National Farm Workers Association, helping to improve wages and conditions for America’s migrant workers.
With a list of review questions and a glossary of terms, this brief publication is ideal for middle school readers and at-risk youth.
